SUDC UK TEAM
Nikki Speed PhD
CEO and Co-Founder
Nikki's little girl, Rosie, died in 2013, affected by Sudden Unexplained Death in Childhood. She was 2 years old, seemingly completely healthy, very loved and a complete joy.
Nikki has a PhD in biochemistry. Using her scientific background and experience as a bereaved parent, she co-founded SUDC UK in 2017. She was appointed the charity's CEO in 2021 and since this time has trained thousands of professionals, directly supported hundreds of suddenly bereaved family members, performed the role of key worker and is an active member of Child Death Overview Panels in England, APPGs for bereavement and grief and the Child Bereavement Network. Nikki is a parent representative on the ACDRP Executive committee and a co-investigator on the Government-funded QUINTET project.
Nikki was a co-author of the NCMD thematic review on SUDIC and has published in journals and presented at scientific conferences. She has successfully collaborated to achieve a national genetic testing NHS pathway after these deaths in England and has consulted on national Royal College clinical guidelines on sudden unexpected death.
Nikki has led parliamentary events and been invited to present at and chair international conference sessions. She is co-chair of the ISPID international working group for SUDC, working to advance SUDC research and improve care for families. She is also a facilitator for Child Bereavement UK, running their sessions on 'supporting families bereaved by a sudden death'.
In Nikki's role at SUDC UK she is privileged to work alongside other families and experts who share a passion that we must do all we can to prevent SUDC in the future, listen to families and provide the best care possible - for every family.
When speaking with another family, Nikki's priorities are always to listen, try to empower them with information and be open about why she believes there is hope after SUDC.
